TI TMS320AVxxx Application Specific DSPs

Multimedia in the home is being driven by the conversion of traditional analog video signals to digital. Digital video will be transmitted over cable, telephone lines, via satellite and cellular. CDs will contain movies and full-motion video playback for interactive applications.

The massive amount of data generated by digitized video requires high-performance DSPs that reduce storage space and transmission bandwidth enabling cost-effective delivery of video to the home. TI's TMS320AVxxx family of application specific DSPs provides the combination of high-performance and cost-sensitivity required by the consumer electronics industry.

TMS320AV110 MPEG Audio Decoder

The TMS320AV110 implements the International Standards Organization - MPEG Audio (Layers 1 and 2) decompression algorithm in a single chip. The 'AV110 accepts compressed data as MPEG audio frames or as the full-multiplexed system stream and outputs decompressed audio in either 16- or 18-bit serial pulse-code modulation (PCM) format. The PCM data stream is suitable for direct input to most commercially available D/A convertors.

TMS320AV120 MPEG Audio Decoder

The TMS320AV120 is a cost-reduced deriviative of the 'AV110. Like the 'AV110, it implements the ISO-MPEG Audio (Layers 1 and 2) decompression algorithm.

The design intent is to produce a simple, "plug and play" audio decoder that does not require a host microprocessor for initialization and/or operation. The input is MPEG audio frame format with provisions for audio/video synchronization. It is a single chip solution with no provision or need for external buffer memory.

TMS320AV220 Video CD MPEG Decoder

The TMS320AV220 is a Video CD MPEG-1 decoder. It is designed to operate with the TMS320AV120 MPEG Audio Decoder to implement a complete audio and video decoder solution. It also interfaces directly with the TMS320AV420 Digital NTSC Encoder.

The 'AV220 is designed to be compatible with Video-CD and Karaoke standards, and is targeted at low-cost, consumer-oriented applications. All components required to accept and decode the multiplexed MPEG-1 system stream are included on the chip, including the logic necessary for audio/video synchronization.

TMS320AV420 Digital NTSC Encoder

The TMS320AV420 is a video encoder that converts the RGB or YUV pixels to analog S-video using digital signal processing techniques. The pixels are input to the 'AV420 using a 13.5 MHz clock. S-video is output from the 'AV420 on two separate RS170A-compatible analog channels, the luminance (Y) channel and the chrominance (C) channel. The 'AV420 operates in either interlaced or non-interlaced mode. The internal and external synchronization capabilities, vertical line interpolation, on-screen display, and direct interfacing features provide the 'AV420 video quality and facilitate video system design.
